Supreme's linking up with Pope.L this week, bringing the New York-based artist's powerful performance work to a new capsule. For those unfamiliar, Pope.L has been pushing boundaries in public spaces since the late '70s, using his body and presence to challenge how we think about race, class, and who belongs where. His signature "crawls" - literally crawling through city streets over extended periods - are equal parts endurance test and social commentary.
The most ambitious of these crawls happened between 2001 and 2009, when Pope.L spent eight years incrementally crawling 22 miles up Broadway from lower Manhattan to the South Bronx, dressed in a Superman costume with a skateboard strapped to his back. Called The Great White Way, the project asked difficult questions about public space, visibility, and whose bodies are welcome where. That's the work Supreme's pulling from for this collection, which includes a T-shirt and two skateboard decks featuring imagery from the performance.
The collection drops September 8th in the US, with Japan getting it on September 10th. It's a solid collaboration choice that fits Supreme's history of working with artists who actually have something to say - no pricing details yet, but expect standard ranges for the category.
